Clean beauty is experiencing a huge movement right now (yay, FINALLY) and I want to make an easy list of the top three toxic ingredients you should ban from your makeup products today. While there are dozens of chemicals that you should be aware of, this quick list will serve as your go-to of the top three toxic ingredients to ban from your makeup products. Keep this list handy when you want to purchase a new product and be sure to check your old makeup products to see what toxic ingredients could be hiding inside!
What seems to be non-obtrusive, you can find this “ingredient” in hundreds of makeup and skincare products. It is a potential mask for a handful of toxic ingredients that companies do not disclose. Or shall I say, need to disclose. What do you mean you might ask? Well, fragrance/parfum is made up of multiple ingredients. Those sed ingredients are NOT required to be labeled individually on the back if they make up the “fragrance/parfum.” So, there could be a couple of hidden nasty and toxic ingredients that are being used to create the scent.
A known human carcinogen that can be found in products from hair smoother to nail polish (even wooden bed frames!) This strong scented gas can cause allergic reactions like burning eyes, coughing, and skin irritation. It becomes more dangerous to our health if there is elongated exposure to products with formaldehyde.
One of the easiest toxic ingredients to spot on your makeup product label. This is because the other names it can “hide” under all end in “paraben.” For example, butylparaben is the same thing as paraben. See, pretty easy to find! This makes it understandable to spot on the ingredient list (even when the name is quite long.) Plus, it quickly lets you put back that *not so cute anymore* makeup or skincare product. Parabens are in so many items we use every day. From shampoos, lotions, cleansers, and more. Our bodies can absorb this toxic ingredient through our skin and digestive system. Parabens can disturb your endocrine system (glands that produce hormones) and can cause harm to your body. So…the lotion that you lather on after you shower does make a difference!
Now that consumers are more aware of the harmful effects of parabens, there are more label call outs. Some makeup products will now have a “paraben-free” call-out on them. Look for this label to quickly check this off your no-no list of toxic ingredients to ban from your makeup products.
Do you know that the ingredient list goes in order of the amount used? This is the same for your food and beverage products like your favorite snacks and drinks, hehe. The product will contain a higher amount of the ingredients at the very beginning of the list than the ones at the bottom.
This list of three toxic ingredients found in makeup products just scratches the surface of what we need to be aware of.
The fact that chemicals can lurk in items you use every day is a no-go. Thus, I stress even more how important it is to take off your makeup before bed each night! I know, I know. But really, it is so important you do this. I for one never was good about this until my college roomie instilled I do it. Now, I’m so thankful that she did! If you are curious why you have to take off your makeup at night, read these five reasons why.
